SHARE TWEET SMS SEND EMAIL The fattening food — corn dogs, ice cream and deep-fried Snickers bars — that politicians confront on the campaign trail are enough to undermine anyone’s fitness goals. To combat all the extra calories, many of the presidential contenders have devised plans to stay in shape. A look at how several are fighting the fat: Jeb Bush Jeb Bush eats a deep-fried candy bar at the Iowa State Fair on Aug. 14, 2015. (Charlie Neibergall, AP) Jeb Bush, 62, may deserve the “biggest loser” title of the 2016 election. The former Florida governor shed 40 pounds in a six-month period, he recently told Des Moines TV station KCCI. The Republican credits working out with a trainer and adopting a Paleo diet on the recommendation of his son, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, who also is a fan of grueling CrossFit routines. “For anybody interested in it, it’s fish, meat, nuts, vegetables and fruit,” Bush recently told a roomful of activists and donors in California at a summitorganized by billionaire Charles Koch. “That’s it. You are not supposed to drink wine, but this caveman occasionally does.” His secrets to success: keep almonds handy for the afternoon munchies and schedule a “cheat” day once a week. “Cheat on Sundays,” he said. Scott Walker Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, 47, has confessed to an abiding love for barbecue. (He even , Tonette, at a Milwaukee barbecue joint, Saz’s, and they returned there on their wedding day.) It’s no surprise then that Walker now is sporting a FitBit on the campaign trail. He received the device, which tracks his exercise and sleep habits, as a Christmas gift last year. He aims for at least 10,000 steps a day — roughly five miles — and six to seven hours of sleep at night, Walker told Politico’s Mike Allen recently at the Koch donor gathering. Mike Huckabee In this 2004 file photo, Mike Huckabee exercises during an early morning workout at the governor’s mansion. (Wesley Hitt, for USA Today) Mike Huckabee, 59, has thedistinction among the presidential contenders of actually having written a diet book, Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork in 2006, about his effort to overcome diabetes. He shed some 100 pounds ahead of the 2008 presidential campaign. The former Arkansas governor said he’s eliminated sugar, fried goodies and junk from his diet but still battles with food temptation. Exhibit A: His decision to eat two slices of pepperoni pizza during a summer campaign stop at a Pizza Ranch in Iowa. (The hoping to capture the Iowa caucuses. Marco Rubio Marco Rubio, 44, hits the gym most mornings on the campaign trail, the Associated Press reports. Rubio kept in shape in high school and college by playing football and received a football scholarship to Missouri’s Tarkio College. In Washington, the first-term Republican senator with Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., during 6 a.m. workouts in the Senate’s gym, according to The New York Times. Chris Christie Chris Christie speaks about his lap band surgeryand weight loss during a news conference on May 7, 2013. ( Jason Towlen, Asbury Park Press) Chris Christie, 52, the governor of New Jersey, made headlines in February 2013 for getting lap-band surgery. It’s not clear exactly how much he has lost; the governor said a report that he shed 85 pounds “wasn’t accurate” but says the surgery significantly improved his health. “It’s the best thing that I’ve ever done for my health. And I look back on it now and wish I’d done it years ago,” Christie said in an April 2015 interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show. Rick Santorum Rick Santorum, 57, does 50 pushups a day to stay fit on the campaign trail, aides told the Associated Press. That’s a good thing because the former Pennsylvania senator has indulged in some milkshakes on the campaign trail.  “Why does my staff keep sending me to these places? #milkshakes #campaigndiet,” the Republican tweeted from the Iowa State Fair. Rand Paul Rand Paul, 52, is a runner who recently tweeted a selfie ofhis workout on the National Mall. Paul and his two brothers were high school swim stars, The New York Times reported in a of the Republican. Paul also swam for Baylor University. “If you have to eat fast food on the trail, skip the fries,” Paul told the. “If you have time for a sit-down dinner, eat only half the meal.” I went on a great monument run today in my 'live free or die' t-shirt. Getting pumped for my visit to tomorrow! — Dr. Rand Paul (@RandPaul) Carly Fiorina Carly Fiorina, 60, takes to the elliptical and squeezes in some Pilates in her hotel rooms in the mornings, her aides said. At home, the Republican also lifts free weights. Donald Trump In this 2006 file photo, Donald Trump hits the links at Trump International Golf Club at Raffles Resort. It’s no surprise that Donald Trump, a billionaire known for his casinos and golf resorts, views golfing as central to his fitness routine. “I used to play all sports. I was always a good athlete. I was always the captain of my teams,”Trump, 69, told Men’s Health in 2013. “I still play golf and I do well at that.” “Staying in shape is very important,” he said. “Sometimes for me that’s a long walk. More often, it’s a game of golf, which some people might not consider exercise, but I’ll tell you: When I play a few rounds on the weekend, I’ll come in Monday morning and I’ll have lost 3 or 4 pounds. That’s very pleasurable exercise, and it keeps you away from the refrigerator because you’re out on the course.” Rick Perry Rick Perry, 65, was known as a fitness buff during his 14-year tenure as Texas governor. In 2008, he even challenged his fellow governors to a friendly, two-week competition to see which chief executive could rack up the most “steps” to raise money to fight childhood obesity. (Idaho Gov. Butch Otter and his team won the contest.) The Republican had to abandon his running routine following back surgery in 2011. These days, “I do a lot of pull-ups, pushups, planks, crunches, and I ride a stationary bike,”he told the AP. Bobby Jindal Bobby Jindal, 44, is an exercise junkie who not too long ago rolled up the sleeves of his button-down dress shirt to participate in an epic , captured by Buzzfeed. The Louisiana governor favors the stationary bike for cardio. “It’s better on the knees, and it’s easier to read while I’m on the bike,” he told MSNBC. The Republican sums up his approach to physical fitness this way: Eat whatever you want, then burn it off through physical exercise. “A lot of people exercise a lot and say their bodies are temples and they eat really healthy,” Jindal told the AP. “I’ve got the opposite mentality.” Hillary Clinton Hillary Clinton, 67, stays healthy on the campaign trail by skipping pizza and practicing yoga, spokesman Nick Merrill recently told the Associated Press. The Democrat’s 2013 dinner with Dr. Mark Hyman generated a flurry of media attention. Hyman, the author of The Blood Sugar Solution: 10-Day Detox Diet, is credited with helping remake President BillClinton’s diet following his 2004 bypass surgery. It’s not clear how much Hyman has shaped Hillary Clinton’s dietary choices, but he offers this health advice to Americans: ditch the Oreos and soda, get eight hours of sleep, get some exercise, stick with gluten-free foods, proteins, and natural fats. He also recommends nuts and lean protein, such as easy-to-pack cans of wild salmon, as travel snacks for his patients, The New York Times reports. (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post via Getty Images) Martin O’Malley Martin O’Malley, 52, is an avowed gym rat who often displayed his pectoral muscles during the annual Polar Bear Plunge into the Chesapeake Bay to benefit Special Olympics. The former Maryland governor changes his workout routine often, his aides say, but it includes both cardio and weightlifting. “He recommends planks,” spokeswoman Haley Morris told USA TODAY.
