Frequently Asked Questions QUESTION: Can I use african american hair care products? I need to hydrate my hair bad and I was wondering if I bought some hair care products that were designed for african americans, would it work or make my hair greasy? ANSWER: i’ve always used them. im mixed but my hair is not kinky at all. i use pink oil moisturizer (start off with a small amount), i use oil sheens too they are good while blow drying and flat ironing. Gueye shampoos and conditioners are really really good. Or cream of nature, but u cant use it too often because it builds up QUESTION: Popular African American Hair Care Products? what are some GOOD , COMMON , african american hair products. ones that can be found in walmart or beauty supply but actual work for growth and dry scalp? (shampoos, conditioners, oils, creams, etc) ANSWER: Most products marketed for “African Americans” aren’t good for our hair at all! If you have dry scalp the best thing is jojoba oil. Straight up stuff. I don’tthink you can find this at walmart but Olive Oil comes second to that. The reason why most black products aren’t good for our hair is because they contain mineral oil and petroleum. These products aren’t very good because they block out moisture which as you know moisture is very important to black hair since it gets dry. For shampoo I recommend a non-sulphate shampoo because they don’t strip your hair of all of it’s natural oils. Sulphate shampoos are the reason why we can’t wash our hair often. With a non-sulphate shampoo it is fine to wash often. Sometimes I wash 1-3 times a week because my shampoo is so gentle my hair can tolerate it. Here’s a list of non-sulphate shampoos (this is a white hair care website but that’s okay! We can take advice from white people too – if they know what they are talking about) For conditioners you can use anything but I recommend avoiding cones at this time of year because it’s so hot that it’s crazy. You’ve been outside right? Well cones tend toblock out moisture in a milder way than petroleum and mineral oil do but they still block out that moisture which your hair *needs* now. Just check the back of conditioners when you are shopping and look for ingredients than end in “cone” those aren’t the best for our hair. Now, I’m not against cones. Just in the summer because they have been causing my hair to dry out. Oils – Oils don’t moisturize the hair they seal in moisture. Just remember that. I know as a kid you were taught that oils moisturized and if your hair was dry use oil. This isn’t true. I guess the reason why people thought this is because if you use an oil on wet hair it will seal in the moisture and keep your hair moisturized. Good oils are olive oil, coconut, jojoba (most expensive but the best) and avocado. Also, if you have thinning hair use castor oil for your scalp. Again.. you will notice I rarely ever suggest anything from the black hair care isle. I do not use any products you can find in the black hair caresection of walmart besides Profectiv & SCurl because those are just about the only products that doesn’t contain petroleum/mineral oil. For cremes you *must* use a moisturizing, water-based, leave-in conditioner/ moisturizer. Just check that water is the first ingredient and steer away from that petroleum and mineral oil Also, it’s perfectly fine to use hair products designed for white people. Those often work better for my hair anyways. I use plain V05 for my conditioner and it’s great, I use Burt’s Bees shampoo which isn’t targeted to black people, I use oils that come out of the food section, and Garnier Fructise leave in conditioner! Also, I’m not going to shun all black hair companies in walmart because I was there just recently and saw some new and upcoming companies that I haven’t tried out yet and I haven’t done my research on them but their ingredients looked pretty good. The companies names were “Sof-n-Free”, “Grohealthy”, ultracare”, and “roots of nature” so they might begood. Also, you should be keeping a moisture/protein balance. Too much protein will lead to hard, crunchy hair that breaks off and too much moisture will lead to soft, mushy hair that comes out in strings. Deep conditioning can counteract either of these problems. You will need a protein treatment and a moisturizing deep conditioner. You don’t have to buy them. I make my protein treatments with egg and mayo and I make my deep conditioner with honey, avocado, and banana mixed in with my conditioner. Also, check out hairlista and the article about proteins. Also, you should be doing a deep treatment at least once a month. I do mine weekly. Also, for black hair care advice check out hairlista.com, longhaircareforum.com, k-i-s-s.biz, and blackhairmedia.com those sites helped me learn how to care for my hair. I’ve only been on them for 3 months and my hair has grown the fastest it ever has. It’s grown from neck length to shoulder length in that time and I don’t expect it to stop growinganytime soon! Just follow their advice it’s really good stuff. Sorry, I forgot about promoting growth. The problem most black people have with “growing” hair isn’t that it won’t grow but that it is breaking off at the same rate that it is growing. Don’t use direct heat, always use a wide-tooth comb to detangle, don’t rip through knots – fingercomb through them, and overall just treat your hair like a fine silk. For growth aids try out castor oil for thickness, cayenne pepper and olive oil for faster growth, just massaging the scalp, and miconozone nitrate (don’t do all of these together lol) those are things people on the forums seem to have a lot of success with QUESTION: Will hair care products for another ethnic group work for me? Saturated and monounsaturated fats are not necessaryin the diet as they can be made in the human body. To get Omega 3 and 6, they must be in your diet. Here are some easy ways to include Omega 3 and 6 in your African American Hair Care Diet Great Linoleic Acid (Omega 6 family) foods sources: Vegetables, Fruits, Nuts, Grains, Seeds Great Alpha-Linolenic Acid (Omega 3 family) foods sources: Flax seeds, Mustard seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Green leafy vegetables Keep your hair moisturized. Shampoo and condition your hair more often, using only quality products. I seen and smelled the horror of what washing one’s hair once a month can do. I’ve been using Giovanni hair careproducts for about 6 months at first it worked great in my hair , now it’s brittle and dry again. I’ve been thinking about either doing biweekly hair conditioning treatments, getting a giovanni leave in conditioner or just switching to wen. What do you think? Have you ever tried wen hair care products. Also is there a cheaper brand that you’ve tried for your hair that works good. I’m african american and have coarse hair. ANSWER: I find that any sulfate free shampoo works well on African American hair as sulfates actually damage our hair causing breakage, dryness and strip the hair of oils that we already lack. I use Organix brand shampoo and conditioner (although I bought just a normal conditioner like Suave or VO5 to save more money as they are the same thing). My niece is natural with 4a/4b armpit length hair and it works very well on her hair, it leaves it so soft, moisturized, clean and smells very good. I love the way it makes her hair and she tends to have very dry, thicknatural hair. QUESTION: What are the Best Products for Natural African American Hair? I have been natural for over 4 years now but I still have never mastered how to properly care for my hair. I have natural, very tight coils/curls in my hair that tend to be dry and poofy. I normally just wear my hair in a TWA or curl my hair for a nice curly fro. Here’s an exampke of my type of hair (not me tho): I use l’oreal shampoo and conditioner for dry hair and the TLC Sunsilk deep conditioner. Sometimes i use African Pride hair oil and Protectiv hair creme. What products work best to maintain moisture and health in my type of hair? I find that i have no shine in my hair, what can I do to give it luster? Also, what can i use to straighten it occasionally? Are there actually no-chemical, no-damage “perms”? Otherwise, what is the best flat iron for my hair? And what products give bounce and shine? ANSWER: Northwest Scents products are specifically formulated for black, African, and highly textured hair. ANSWER: try vonte silk effects its blue smells good and it works and probably if u add the vonte wax its all good for the edges and tie a scarf on ur hair for a while then ur good HTH they both smell yummy but dont use tooo tooo much creates alot of build up so be careful QUESTION: How to take care of relaxed african american hair? my hair is probably a little past shoulder length. i want to know how to keep it mostrized and strong so it doesn’t break and so it can grow. tips and products would be great. also, what should i do with myhair at night besides wrap it because wrapping it never works for me. thanks. ANSWER: I would say moisturize your hair daily. Personally, I use Wave Nouveau Moisturizing Finishing Lotion. Every week, make sure you shampoo and deep condition your hair. I use Cream of Nature shampoo and Elasta Q P Deep penetrating conditioner. After that, you will need to apply a product to your hair to make it strong and not break, which would be a reconstructor. I use Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor. After that, apply a leave in conditioner and moisturizer to your hair so when you dry your hair, your hair will be soft and not rough. I would say air dry your hair but if you want to dry your hair fast, sit under a hood dryer. I wouldn’t recommend you use a blow dryer because they damage your hair and takes out the moisture you just added to your hair out. Also, always use a wide tooth comb when combing hair. They are more better to use than skiny teeth combs. Then, if you decide to flat iron your hair (please no pressing combs, they are too drying and damaging to hair) make sure you apply a heat protectant to your hair. Oh and at night, I would say just make sure you wear a satin or silk scarf. Last but not least, take a multi vitamin every day. Whewwww, that’s a lot ain’t it? lol But for more hair tips, check out my blog on how to take care and grow black healthy hair. I bought shampoos for both conditions, but that didn’t seem to help either. I don’t really put much on my hair besides grease. after a few days it gets oily and itchy faster, so I try not to use too much of it. For deep conditioning I use Matrix Biolage Conditioner (may purchase from hair salons such as Ulta Cosmetics), gives me great results. Note: I wash my hair once a week; in between I may do a conditioner rinse. On wet hair I will apply 100% Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil (from Whole Foods Market), locks in the moisture. I also use the Biolage Conditioning Balm as a leave-in. The only thing that I’ve changed that has allowed my hair to grow was limiting the amount of heat I use on my hair. If you’ve never heard of them, will you notify me of any products that do? ANSWER: Use Mane ‘N Tail hair products. I have notice a lot of new growth. I message my scalp with their Carrot Oil Cream and wash my hair with their Shampoo and Condition and use their daily Hair Strengthener. I have notice a big difference, but the main thing you need to do is message your scalp at least twice a week with Triplegro and see what happens after 30 days. I also checked the HOOD RAT SNEAKY “SNAKE” STEPH!!! QUESTION: I have african american hair. How should I maintain it? I have african american hair.I get perms every 6 weeks, but after that I don’t know how to take care of it.I use doo gro mega thick vitalizer but my hair is never soft. How can I get myhair to be soft and long without using flat irons?Does wrapping the hair works. Can you please give me advice and some products that I can use that will make my hair SOFT, LONG and BOUNCY? Thanks for answering this question.Happy New Years! ANSWER: Using salon hair products is not necessarily what is best for your hair. You should have a Shampoo and Conditioner that penetrates your hair and stimulates the scout. I use Fantasia’s Tea Green Naturals Shampoo and Conditioner and it has worked wonders. I also use a moisturizer that does not contain petroleum jelly. Petroleum only coats the hair not penetrate it. I use Inter Cellar leave in moisturizer and deep penetrating moisturizer. Deep penetrating is for weekly use and leave in is for daily. You should wash your hair at least every three days and moisturize daily. Try to limit your use of hot blow dryers and only brush your hair when you are styling it. Brushing only pulls out your hair. A head dryer is best for drying your hair. DON’Tclip your ends. It’s not needed unless you are trying to make your hair neater. Also take vitamins if you don’t have the best diet. Your vitamins should contain Zinc and Protein. Don’t be fooled by products that says it contains vitamins. Vitamins being place directly on your hair doesn’t work unless it’s protein. QUESTION: how to take care of african hair? My hair is medium when it comes to texture by the way. I would just love to here some advice on how to take care of african american hair. Both Natural and straight. include lots of detail, Shampoo, how often should I relax, should I use grease, which hair products work well(something in Africa’s Best) and how often should I relax the hair(Ive decided not to go natural) oh and natural home remedies and herbs I can put in my hair. Even down to the types of foods I can eat to help hair growth(certian foods have protein that make your hair healthy) I heard purple onion juice makes it shiney and healthier, anything you got! Mickey :/you just annoyed me and irritaded the hell out of me ANSWER: This is my real hair as my avatar picture. I own an up and coming hair care company and you can find me on Facebook at Steffie Francais Hair Care. Taking care of African American hair isn’t difficult at all. All you need are the right products, and no grease because petroleum and mineral oil are bad for our hair, these ingredients clog the follicles and hinders maxium hair growth. Washing our hair is simple, one rule; no sulfates. Sulfates are the reasons why we are told not to shampoo our hair often, but once you find a shampoo without these you are on your way to healthy clean hair. My shampoo is all natural and contains no sulfates, it is non-drying and can be used as often as everyday. You could also just rinse and condition your hair everyday or every other day. Our hair is typically dry so our hair loves moisture and the only real moisture source is water, the problem arises when the water evaporates and leaves the hairdry and brittle, what you want to do is retain that moisture in the form of an oil, preferably a natural oil… preferably something with shea butter or olive oil in it Be careful of store brought products… because the majority of black products aren’t made by black people and are only manufactured for the company’s profits. Whatwould be the best Shampoo and Conditioner for my hair i want it to be healthy. Also would brands like Tresemme that market to Caucasian people work for my hair also? I live in a small mostly white community were the selection for black hair care products is small and there usually out of my way ANSWER: You’d be surprised that many products that do not market specifically to blacks can be used by any hair type. I haven’t used products marketed towards blacks in years because they usually contain bad ingredients (IE: petroleum), so don’t limit yourself to what you can use. I will usually try a product unless it mentions it’s for a certain hair type (blonde, wavy, relaxed, natural, etc). There are many products you can try for your hair from the cheapies like Sauve and V05 (I have V05 moisture milks shampoo) to products like Paul Mitchell, which can only be found in a salon; I used to use Dove and Pantene when I was relaxed. I use natural and organic products, like Wen and Giovanni, oliveoil, shea butter, etc for my hair. Wen is a natural hair care line, and Giovanni is a certified organic product line. I have no longer have relaxed hair, but many people with relaxed hair use them, too. BTW, blacks usually have a very dry hair type that needs more moisture than other hair types. Relaxers also dry out the hair, which is why many have to keep their scalp oiled/greased. is where you can get product recommendations. QUESTION: African american women hair help?? QUESTION: African american women and dermatitis.? I would like to know what hair care products work best for african american women who suffer with dermatitis? ANSWER: Avoid products containing sulfates (detergents), cones (silicone), or petroleum as these chemicals will irritate your skin. Try Aubrey Organics or Giovanni hair care products. Stick with more natural solutions like aloe vera gel, pure oils (ex. olive, coconut, jojoba), or pure, unrefined shea butter. Shea butter is especially good for nourishing and toning your skin. You might also take note of the harsh, artificial ingredients contained in the other products (ex. lotion, laundry detergent, dish detergent, make up) that you use as these also trigger flare ups. FYI – dark leafy greens are very effective at clearing your skin. HTH Good luck! I’ve been trying to get my hair to become healthy again but I have really bad split ends & my scalp is very dry. I’ve tried several different products but nothing seems to work. I know that I have to cut all the split ends off for it to start growing again & I’m prepared to do that. Oh by the way I’m an African American woman with very course & bushy hair. Can someone please offer some hair care products that can help me to start getting my hair back healthy & something to help with my very dry scalp?? Also I want to cut my hair short so can someone recommend some styles for someone with a round face? ANSWER: Cut off ALL of the split ends just cut the ends then go with a style from there For shampoo and conditioner: Aubrey Organics Use the conditioner as a deep conditioner once a weekapply it to hair then wrap a plastic bag or saran wrap around it for at less an hour or overnight Oil(for hair and scalp): Coconut Castor Olive (you don’t have to buy all just one of your choice) I put oil on my scalp and hair every night If your natural only comb hair when wet and you also want to keep your hair in a protective style you should check out this ladies youtube channel for more info about hair there are alot more out there too QUESTION: Can black people use “white” hair products? I am an african american albino with curly hair. I wouldn’t consider ti coarse or nappy or anything like that, it’s just spiral curly and I’m just wondering if I can use what others consider “white” hair care products, such as Pantene, Garnier Fructis, Herbal Essence, Aussie? Or would those not work for my hair because my mother seems to think it won’t. Thanks for future answers! ANSWER: They’re for ALL people. Hair are different textures, hair products do NOT go by the color of hair, or texture. They are formulated by chemically treated hair, or normal hair. The hair industry is a billion dollar business, they sell products that cleans & condition the hair. They also sell products that damage and causes hair loss. They also DO NOT give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss due to ‘abuse’. When you wash your hair with one of those nutrient-rich shampoos, most of the nutrients and active ingredients in the product don’t actually end up in your hair, they wind up down the drain… along with all the money you spent on the shampoo. It is HOW you use to style your hair or what styling tools that damage the hair, and what chemicals you’re adding to the hair, not the shampoo. QUESTION: Does Doctor Wonder Anti-Breakage Gro Cream really work? Plus, how can I grow my african american hair out? I just bought Doctor Wonder’s Anti-Breakage Gro Cream. No, it’s not the strengths cream, it says on the container anti-breakage gro cream. My question is does it actually work? I havepretty bad breakage and I want to stop that breakage. I want to grow my hair longer than it is.My hair is thick, shoulder and length and it’s relaxed. I want to grow my hair to be about back length. Any hair products recommended for hair growth? When I got about in 5TH grade my hair grew out to be pretty thick then, all of a sudden it stopped growing? What am I doing wrong? I use this oil therapy shampoo, I use Shea butter leave in conditioner. Then I also use carol’s daughter leave in black vanilla leave in conditioner spray. Recently I started putting coconut hair grease on the ends of my hair. How long will it take me to get my hair to about back length? By the way I’m 13 and I’m in 8th grade, so what grade would I be in til my hair gets that long if i take care of it? I tried going natural but that broke my relaxed hair off because I didn’t know you had to cut all your relaxed hair off. So, can anybody give me tips to help my hair growth, how to take care of it properly, and does theDoctor Wonder Anti-Breakage Gro cream work. Thanks:) ANSWER: QUESTION: non-relaxed natural hair care products? i heard of carol’s daughter and would like to purchase some of her products. does anyone know or have had a personal experiences they can share. also, i would like to know what works best for natural (non-relaxed) african american hair. i would prefer to usual all natural products. my hair has gotten so long and frizzy, i don’t know what to do with it. i just want to cut it off….. thanks! ANSWER: Personally, I don’t use any Carol’s Daughter products, but I’ve heard other naturals rave about Carol’s Daughter’s Hair Milk. What works for my hair: * No-pooing w/ VO-5 Conditioners (my hair tends to dry out w/ Shampoo, and co-washing leaves my hair soft & moisturized) * EVOO & Motions moisturizer – I use Motions to moisturize my ends, and then put the EVOO on to lock it in. It protects my ends, so I don’t have to trim as often. * Clarifying w/ Baking soda and water leaves my hairsoft and detangled *Deep Conditioner- Motions Moisturizing Cond. * Pre-cond. w/ mayo, egg & lemon juice (sounds yucky but it makes my hair strong and shiny) Also: Castor Oil, Coconut oil, and indian oils, such as Keshvardhini and Amla Oil, are great for the hair. I use a bunch of other products (lol), but I don’t know if they qualitfy as all-natural products. With long, natural hair, I agree that it’s sometimes frustrating, but I find that if I just put my hair in protective styles, such as braids or buns, it allows me to exhale and to not have to worry about it so much. Hope that helped. =) QUESTION: URGENT!!! i need a hair pro’s opinion. or anyone elses =] ? ok i went to walmart today in search of something that will help my hair grow faster. (and please dont waste your time saying hair grows as fast as it wants to grow, or that topical products dont work, or take vitamins, or trim it every month, or what-not) ok anyway its called “doo gro: mega thick growth oil”. it: -promotesthick, strong, growing hair -thickens and strengthens weak and damaged hair -shea butter, vitamin and botanical thickener formula -tames frizzies -adds shine in my walmart the hair growth stuff is right beside the african american hair care products. i dont know if this is important. but it says can be used on all hair types. after i took a shower i applied it to my damp hair. i only used a small amount to cover my scalp so it wouldnt be super oily. i just wanna ask if anyones used this and if so did it work? and are there any downsides? thanks all. p.s. i’m white. if that matters. ANSWER: I’ve used it, and is ok, nothing special (for me, my mom uses it lots, it does wonders for her hair, but she’s got softer hair than me) and it IS an AA product, so idk how much it’ll help you… but if u do use it, take a pin-head sized amount on your finger and put it on ur scalp, a little goes a long way, just like vaseline. Have u tried tea-tree oil? Or maybe a new conditioner? That might be the keyto healthy (and faster growing) hair. Try hair mayonaise, I luv the stuff, its really good… u can find that at walmart too. QUESTION: Natural hair care products?!? I have this completely crazy hair.. If I let it dry naturally after I shower, it “inflates”, and becomes very frizzy and blah. It is naturally wavy. I would liek to make it more managable (preferably even to a point where I can shower, put some product on, and go!)… Everything I have used so far doesn’t work. It is shoulder-length, and I am not african-american (Just so you know..) Any tips?!?! I have tryed sunsilk, garnier fructis, and herbal essence, and I still have to straighten it in order for it to look ok. My ultimate goal is beautiful hair that I don’t have to use heat (straightener or dryer) on! I haven’t colored or permed it. Only natural products( at least without dangerous chemicals) please! ANSWER: olive oil QUESTION: Best Hair Care Product? My hair is soo frizzy! It’s really curly and gets matted easily if Idon’t comb it out and braid it up every night. I’ve been searching high and LOW for a hair care product to make my curls more silky. (I’m african american and white, by the way) Does anyone have any ideas of what “black” hair product would work best in doing so?? ANSWER: QUESTION: What hair care products should I use? I’m African-American. I used to use relaxers on my hair, but I haven’t for almost a year now. I currently use Suave shampoo and conditioner, and it works well, but I just want to explore my options and see what else is out there. I have medium length hair. It dries fairly quickly. I still have relaxed hair, mostly on my ends, and I have no interest in cutting it off; I’d rather let it grow out. The texture is not too far from fine; it’s not coarse or nappy or anything. I have semi-loose curls when it gets wet. I don’t mind purchasing lotions and volumizers. I just want to figure out what works best. ANSWER: Target has a lot of hair products for “multicultural” hair…Ithink the Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in is the best. You can also try; Shea moisture, Jane Carter, Miss Jessie’s, Curls… Good Luck! QUESTION: What’s good products for natural hair, to help growth and that moisturizes? I’m african american transitioning to natural hair, it has been 5 months since my last relaxer and my hair gets really dry. I used Kera Care products in my hair and they worked pretty good for me. I just started using Carol’s daughter and only found success with the hair smoothie– works good in my hair as a deep condition (i wash my hair weekly). Any suggestions on products that will help my hair grow and keep it moisturized…that i can use on a daily basis? While i’m asking any suggestions on transitioning styles— without using heat without putting it in braids/twists ANSWER: QUESTION: Okay first of all, no one take this the wrong way..? I was just wondering if it is bad to use african american hair care products if you’re caucasion? For instace, ive heard about a QueenHelene’s product that is good, but it is considered to be a african american based product.. but wouldn’t it still work just fine for my hair?? Please don’t take this question the wrong way. ANSWER: Not at all, I use them all the time. I have very thick, coarse and curly hair and those products work best on my hair. I’m Caucasian and I’ve never had a problem with it. Use whatever works best for you. That’s what I do, it doesn’t matter if it is for a man/woman or other race; whatever works is what is important. Jaz QUESTION: Hair Questions??…For African American Hair.? Hello all..I’m Blair, Umm i just recently got a haircut in the hopes of it looking like Rhianna’s bob. It is pretty close to what Rhianna’s looked like but I am having lots of trouble taking care of it. I am african american so my hair is very thick, coarse, and sometimes “nappy”. I’ve been using the Bath and Body works brand of shampoo and conditionert and I do not like it at all. I wrap my hair at night so it stayssomewhat straight but I usually end up having to go through it with a straightener in the morning. I really need a new shampoo, new conditioner, moisterizer, and heat tamer that would suit my hair well. I also wish my hair would grow back soon. I would just love for it to be at least shoulder length. So if you have any tips or products that would help it grow that would be great too. Thank you sooo much. And here is a picture of my hair: And I have a relaxer also. I forgot that part too. Sorry. ANSWER: I don’t think Bath and Body works shampoo is right for you. You need a shampoo like Thermasilk; it works well with heat. I’ve heard Mane and Tail is good although I’ve never tried it. You’re going to have to go to a beauty supply store to find that as well as Cream of Nature. Pantene is good and so is Tresemme. You should use hair oil that comes in the spray can and not grease because grease can weigh your hair down. Only use a dime or nickle size of grease to put on your scalp after youhave washed your hair and it is dry. To take away from some of the heat you should not blow dry you hair after washing it but let it air dry. Go to They have some good tips!! Hope I helped QUESTION: i want to by Dr miracle haircare products but I’m skeptical? people have said that it works really well and the others said it thins out your hair im tying to fix damage and restart hair growth so if there are better hair care products for african americans please tell me ANSWER: Hmmm, don’t use Dr. Miracles. I’ve heard it has worked for some people and i’ve heard it hasn’t helped any, but honestly… Their products contain mineral and/or petroleum. Those aren’t good for African American hair. If you want to fix your damaged hair… You don’t have to buy just ONE line of product to do that. If you educate yourself on hair care, then you’ll easily be able to know what types of products to use and when. - Always wash your hair w/ a moisturizing shampoo/conditioner. Every week. (I use Tresemme orInfusium.) - Trim your ends as needed. - Deep condition weekly. (You will need to rotate between moisturizing ones or ones that full of protein depending on your hair. And i’d say since your hair is damaged… You may need protein. Like the girl mentioned above, Aphogee’s a great product to do just that. ) - Moisturize your hair everyday with a water based moisturizer… Be sure to pay attention to the ends. - Do hot oil treatments at least once a month. - Tie your hair up with a satin scarf. - Keep your hair off of your shoulders. - Exercise. - Massage the scalp daily. - Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Also, don’t use products that contain petroleum or mineral oil. All they do is clog the pores in the scalp and make it dirtier. QUESTION: AFRICAN AMERICAN HAIR? ok im going natural this summer and i have a really hard time taking good care of my hair and finding some great Products that really work for my hair and i wanted to know if anyone knew some GREAT Products that will help me gonatural and keep my hair healthy? oh and how often should you wash your hair when going natural? thank VERY you..:)(: ANSWER: Thanks for the shout out above, Adelyn B! Much love! Yes, visit NaturallyCurly.com or better yet, our youtube channel —> lots of ladies with different hair types! Check out Evelyn’s youtube page, she started transitioning her freshman year of college (late 2008) and big chopped this past january! —> To find your natural hair regimen, it’ll really be trial and error. Some people can go without shampooing for 4 weeks. Some can’t stand going more than 7 days. Just try what works for you. Remember there’s also CO-WASHING, or washing with conditioner. No it won’t lather, but it’ll cleanse your hair. Most people’s hair doesn’t get dirty enough in one day to require intense shampoo to clean it. Remember, DRYNESS is a big problem with curly hair. Our scalps naturally make oil (called SEBUM). The oil travels down the hair strand, moisturizing it naturally. But thecurlier the hair, the more difficult it is for the molecules of oil to reach the hair. Often times, the oil can’t defy gravity and travel to your hair (if it sticks out in an afro). So our scalps gets dirty and oily, but our hair feels dry. Keep your hair moisturized with shea butters or other products that soak INTO the hair, not just lay on top of it. any more questions? just ask one of the ladies on the youtube channel! whew! hope this helped QUESTION: Hair question!! I am african american with relaxed hair. My hair is medium/long in length. I am going to college out of state which means I will have to find someone else to do my hair. I don’t even know which products to use or how to care for my hair properly on my own I was thinking of getting a sedu flat iron? My hair texture is thin. If you could help me out and give me some tips and products I could use as a shampoo and conditioner that work well, I would be so grateful. How many times a week should I do a deep condition for my hair to keep it healthy? Should I get a blow dryer or just the flat iron? ANSWER: QUESTION: Help me with my African American relaxed hair PLEASE!? I have African American relaxed hair. I am about to get a new relaxer and a trim in a week or so. After my relaxer I want to know exactly what to do with my hair so that it will be long and healthy. I have tried lots of products but none of them seem to work just right. The problem is i hate it when my hair is greasy so I am looking for another product other than grease to use on my hair. I also would like to know exactly what I should do to my hair every single day.I really need help taking care of it. But I really do not want my hair to be greasy and flat. I want my hair to be able to move and not be stuck flat to my head. I do want my hair to be straight but not stuck to my head and greasy! I need to know how to take care of it! Please help! Thanks soooooooo much! ANSWER: I have a friend who is a stylist. When I was having hair issues, this is the advice she gave me. I’m telling you, it works. My hair is growing and beautiful!!! Good luck. I would suggest that you DON’T do anything like apply braids or weave until we strengthen your tresses, as well as your scalp. If you can, go to a good stylist who specializes in healthy hair. Unfortunately I can’t recommend anyone in particular in Chicago , but one good tip is to look for someone who is certified in Mizani products. I’ve found that the training Mizani provides is excellent, and if someone uses the products correctly, the results are phenomenal. What are the facts about hair? FACTS YOU SHOULDKNOW ABOUT YOUR HAIR Fact 1 Hair is 70% to 80% protein. Protein is one of the most critical elements found in hair. The breakdown of these natural elements can cause a loss of moisture, shine and flexibility. Therefore, it is necessary to replace any proteins lost because of normal hair stress. Fact 2 Damage to hair occurs regularly. Loss of necessary poteins and moisture due to normal hair stress will detract from your hair’s healthy appearance. Environmental elements (wind, sun, etc.), styling implements (curling iron, blow dryer, etc.) and chemical processing (relaxers, color, etc.) can unavoidably damage hair. You can minimize damage and hair loss with customized conditioning treatments. Fact 3 An average person sheds between 60-80 strands of hair per day. Shedding hair is a natural occurrence. But, the amount shed from the average head should not be noticeable. Remember, the average amount of hair shed varies with the individual, so it is important to have a customized treatmentregimen to keep hair loss at a minimum. Fact 4 Hair grows an average of 1/2 inch per month. Hair growth is stimulated and nourished by the blood circulation underneath your scalp. The nourishment is derived from the foods you eat. So, even when you think your hair isn’t growing, on average it grows 1 /2 inch per month. Therefore, every year you can expect at least six new inches of hair. At times it may seem as if your hair isn’t growing at all. This is because as hair grows from the scalp, damaged, weakened ends break off -sometimes as much as two inches. That’s why the most important part of maintaining healthy hair is having it trimmed regularly. Trimming as little as 1/8 of an inch per month can eliminate split or weakened ends that may potentially break the entire hair shaft. In the mean time, this is the regimen I suggest for you. Do this weekly, and you will see results virtually immediately. Do this stuff at home. It’s well worth the investment, and much less expensive thangoing to a stylist. Wash hair once with MIZANI® PuripHying ™ Shampoo. PuripHying ™ is a deep cleansing shampoo that conditions and fortifies damaged areas as it adds softness and sheen. It gently removes excess oils, styling products and environmental pollutants that regular shampoos cannot. Wet the hair thoroughly. Apply MIZANI® PuripHying® Shampoo. Massage into a rich luxurious lather. Rinse thoroughly. For a second lather, shampoo with MIZANI® BotaniFying™ Shampoo. BotaniFying™ promotes softness and resilience. It is also an excellent shampoo for those with fine or damaged hair because it gently cleanses and restores your hair’s natural luster and flexibility. Apply MIZANI® BotaniFying™ Conditioning Shampoo. Massage into rich luxurious lather. Rinse thoroughly. Towel blot. Apply a mixture of 1 oz. of Moisturfuse® Moisturizing Conditioner, and 1 oz. MIZANI Kerafuse Protein Conditioner (if you can find the Kerafuse; otherwise use a Hask Henna ‘N’ Placenta Conditioning Hair Pack) tothe hair. Natural Protein Conditioner helps reduce damage and mend split ends, adds body, luster, resiliency and strength to hair. The Moisturfuse® saturates and revitalizes dry hair and scalp with moisturizers and proteins that help reduce breakage and protect against split ends. Comb through gently with a wide tooth comb. Cover head with a plastic cap. Sit under warm dryer or heating cap for 10 minutes. Take plastic cap off and sit under dryer for an additional 5 minutes, without cap to seal in treatment. Rinse thoroughly with tepid water to remove all residue. Towel dry your hair. Wrap your hair. (Do not blow-dry it. While it is a quick, convenient way to dry and style hair, blow drying damages hair as the high heat from a blow dryer can actually boil the water in the hair shaft leaving it brittle. In addition, vigorous towel rubbing or combing of wet hair also can cause hair loss, since wet hair is more elastic and more vulnerable to breakage than dry hair: 1. Apply a TINY amountof KeraCare Leave In Conditioner and a dime-sized to quarter-sized amount of Mizani Thermastrength. The Leave in Conditioner helps prevent thermal, combing and ultraviolet damage. It improves the surface properties of hair, leaving it smooth and with lots of sheen. It also contains sunscreen. Thermastrength is formulated with patented advanced strengthening and anti-breakage ceramide technology to dramatically improve the hair’s tensile strength, leaving the hair feeling strong, shiny and full of body. 2. Locate a point at the top of the head and comb hair down in umbrella fashion. 3. Add KeraCare Foam Wrap-Set Lotion generously to your hair. Foam Wrap-Set Lotion provides a fabulous hold, while leaving hair soft, silky and with great shine. 4. Direct hair around head in a clockwise fashion (or counter clockwise depending on preference), keeping the hair smooth and close to the head (almost as if the head was a giant hair roller). 5. Use the small-toothed comb (or brush) to smooth allloose ends into the wrap. 6. Secure the hair with wrap strips or neck strips. 7. Dryer time: 1/2 hour to 1 hour (plus) depending on length. Hair must dry completely! If you need to flat iron your hair, first apply a flat iron spray. I suggest you use Shine and Smooth Straighten Out Flat Iron Spray by LaCoupe. This lightweight spray is formulated with silk proteins, ProVitamin B5, keratin and silk amino acids which combine to smooth and shine hair, as well as create a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss during straightening. Hold bottle 20-25cm from dry hair. Spray evenly. Apply flat iron or curling iron and heat style section by section as desired. Curl your hair with Mizani Silkening and Curling Wax. This unique blend of oils and botanical extracts provides curl definition to enhance style memory. It seals in moisture as it provides a sheild of protection against humidity and thermal styling. Apply a small amount of product in palm of hands. Rub hands together vigorously in acircular motion then apply throughout hair. Proceed with curling iron. For a more defined silky style, apply a small amount of product to each section of hair before curling. Apply Mizani Spradiance High Gloss Serum. It provides a high gloss shine without the greasy build-up finish. You just need to apply a dime size amount into palm, rub together and work product evenly through the hair. Now you’re done. Do this every week, and you will be amazed at the difference in your hair. Now, for daily maintenance for your hair follow these steps: Always wrap your hair up at night. This prevents your hair from “catching” on the pillow case and breaking off. This also keeps the natural hair oils in your hair and not in the pillowcase. Tying your hair up doesn’t have to be grounds for divorce. Make sure you use a satin scarf Never use cotton scarves. They will draw the moisture from your hair. Or, invest in some satin pillowcases. They don’t have to be expensive ones, just a satiny type ofmaterial that will allow the hair to “glide” while you sleep (Can we say “beauty supply”?) And, every three or so nights use MIZANI H20 Nighttime Intense Treatment. Apply a small amount to hands, rub together, massage through and prepare hair for your normal night-time regimen. For best results, use consistently for at least two weeks. Always BE GENTLE with your hair, particularly if it has been chemically treated. This includes coloring as well as relaxed hair or curly-permed hair. If you have had chemical treatments, then always treat your hair as though it is damaged, even if you don’t have split ends. Always use a wide toothed comb, even for styling . Make sure the teeth of the comb are very smooth. Jagged edges on the teeth will “catch” and pull your hair out. Invest is a good, natural boar bristle brush. Brushing the hair is to help distribute the natural oils from the scalp down the length of the hair. Use a softer brush and more patience when brushing your hair. My favorite
