You can still maintain a high rate of metabolism. With the correct target you can tone any muscle to your desired level. Here are examples of workouts for women over 40.

Swimming

This is one exercise that can help you in losing some weight. Swimming knows no age group and therefore you will be at a position to have fun while at the same time, do some intensive workout. While swimming, you can work out the muscles in your arms, legs and the rest of your body. With the correct strokes, you will lose more weight than you can imagine with just a few swimming sessions.

Thigh Toning

There are a number of exercises that can help you in toning your muscles. For example, you use the seated leg raise to tone some of these muscles. All you need for this exercise is a stable chair where you sit and with your legs firmly on the ground at a ninety degree angle on the knees and your hands by your side, you lift one leg at time. As the leg goes up, you exhale and inhale as it goes down. Repeat this severally with both legs.

Seated Pillow Squeeze

The seated pillow squeeze is another great exercise for your thighs. Sit on a stable chair. Place your feet on the ground with the knees at an angle of ninety degrees. Place your pillow in between the thighs. Then squeeze the pillow with your thighs while exhaling. Maintain this position for a minute as you inhale and exhale normally. Then give your thighs a short break before you resume the exercise.

Stairs

The stair case in your house may have more use than just accessing different floors in your home. You can use for an exercise routine. Climb up and down the stars severally to raise your metabolic rate. You can do this as many times as you please as long as you do not hurt your muscles. You may choose to do this for a couple of days in a week.
