On Wednesday night I decided to be a little spontaneous and try a new class at my fitness center, the Barbell Strength Class. I figured it would do me well by totalling surprising my body with a new workout.
The Barbell Strength Class is a full body, strength training workout using barbells and dumbbells. You spend about 5 minutes working each of the major muscle groups focusing on muscular endurance. This means you really feel the burn. Squats, lunges, bicep curls, tricep extensions, dead lifts, shoulder presses and a few core exercises made you really sweat and feel this intense workout. Even though there was no cardio movements, your heart rate still got up there because of the intensity of the workout.
The next day I had a good case of DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). You will get DOMS within 8 – 24 hours after a new, intense workout. This is good because it let’s you know the workout is really effective and surprising your body with something new. This is how you get progressive results.
The instructor, Regina, was awesome! She gave clear directions, was upbeat and positive, had great music and made the class fun. I will definitely take it again as a form of crosstraining. I highly recommend it. Try it.
